High Definition Video Information Page

                       04 Aug 2011

Beginning with the South Africa project in April 2005, all CRF Media videos have been filmed in High Definition format.

Significant extra effort and expense is required for preparing the material for the High Definition format presentation.  The HD videos are only distributed to those with proper equipment to make full use of the videos.

At the present time, these videos are distributed only on standard DVD discs and require a high-speed computer or other video player and appropriate High Definition display.

The HD-720 is the standard HD format with a 16 x 9 aspect ratio and 1280 x 720 square pixels.  This format is intended for use with a XVGA projector.  Many churches now have this mid-range video projector.  Some churches have sufficiently large screens to take full advantage of the increased resolution. The video data rate is 4 mb/s.

The HD-1080 is the standard full resolution High Definition video with a 16 x 9 aspect ratio and 1920 x 1080 square pixels.  This is for the  few who have a very high speed computer and the top end display hardware.  The video data rate is 8 mb/s.
The HD540 is a non-standard HD format with a 16 x 9 aspect ratio and 960 x 540 square pixels. This one-half size HD1080 format has a file size suitable for downloading on the internet. The video data rate is 2.8 mb/s.
The HD files are encoded using a high quality variable rate encoder and at 30 frames per second ( fps )

All videos are encoded in the mp4 format. The mp4 allows for a 2 to1 reduction in file size over that of the MPEG-2; however, it requires a corresponding increase in computer processing speed.

The computer speed requirements are as follows:

HD1080 .......  2.5 GHZ quad core computer or hardware player such as the Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player

HD720 .........  2.0 GHZ dual core computer or hardware player such as the Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player

HD540 .........  1.4 GHZ single core computer or hardware player such as the Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player

For more details go to the  mp4 information page.

Video format comparisons:

The following pictures are one-half size the actual size for various video formats. Click on the full size link for the actual size.

The  pictures below are from this same frame at about 23 seconds into the video clip.   Be sure you view each picture at its 100% resolution.

A corresponding resolution is obtained from the three test video clips.  IMPORTANT:  It is necessary to download and install the video player from the web site at www.videolan.org .  This player is about 10 mB for the PC and about 13 mB for the Mac. More about using the videolan player.

High Definition videos are distributed only to those possessing equipment that supports the requested format.  Below are three short HD video clips that can be downloaded to test the HD compatibility.  These video clips are the first 30 seconds of the Bania video.  The beginning of the video is a mass of people moving past the camera.  This mass movement tests the computer speed.  The motion of all the people should be smooth; i.e., free from distracting jumps in the sequence.  Slight steps in fast motion will be observed since the frame rate is 24 fps. This frame rate is the same as conventional film.  The  five seconds following the people is of a castle in Mysore, Karnatoka, India.   Jaganmohana Palace was built by Sir Chamaraja Wodeyar for his daughter.    A sequence near the center of the display has three balconies on three different floors of the huge structure.  The vertical posts just to the left of the light pole should all be visible as in the cropped out section. These small posts are about 1.4 pixels wide when viewed at the 1080 resolution and about one pixel wide for the 720 resolution.

Detail of Frame at 23 seconds on the video clip. Each of the smaller posts just to the left of the lamp post are about 1.4 pixels wide.

In order to realize full resolution HD quality, each post must be discernable from the adjacent post.

Note the small dog walking behind the lady. The dog will be observable in the video clip and you can see its tail wagging.

This is the detail that should be observable from the full resolution video. Click here for the  full size picture  of the 1920 x 1080 frame. Make sure that the frame is displayed at exactly 100% on the computer monitor.

Download 30 seconds of HD1080 video (75 mB)   Note: This file is encoded in the MPEG-2 format rather than the mp4 that we use for normal download purposes. This file will play with a 3.0  GHZ computer processing speed.

Download 30 seconds of HD540 video  (7.8 mB) This is an mp4 file and is the format used for all videos for down load on this web site. We call this format mp4-LW. More on the mp4 format....

1.4 GHZ computer processing speed required.

This is the detail that should be observable from standard definition video - wide screen mode. Click here for the full size picture of the 873 x 480 frame.  Make sure that the frame is displayed at exactly 100% on the computer monitor. The posts as described will not be observable in this frame and represents the resolution of standard definition video.

The actual video has a resolution of 720 x 480 pixels but the horizontal scale is stretched to give the 16 x 9 aspect ratio.

We do not provide this format for down load purposes.
